VA Home Loan Funding Fee Calculator

Most VA home loans come with a one-time funding fee, and a lot of veterans don't have to pay it at all. Answer a few questions to see whether you might be exempt and, if not, about what the fee would be. We use VA's own rate table. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

Step 1: Check if You're Exempt

VA says you don't pay the funding fee if any of these is true:

  • You receive VA compensation for a service-connected disability.
  • You're eligible for VA disability compensation but receive retirement or active-duty pay instead.
  • You're a surviving spouse who receives Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).
  • You're a service member who, before closing, has a proposed or memorandum rating saying you're eligible for compensation based on a pre-discharge claim.
  • You're on active duty and show proof of a Purple Heart on or before your closing date.
Does one of these apply to you?

Step 2: Tell Us About the Loan

Have you used a VA home loan before?

Good to Know

  • This is an estimate. Your lender works out the exact fee on your loan.
  • For buying or building, putting 5% or more down lowers the rate, and 10% or more lowers it again. It also removes the higher rate for using the benefit a second time.
  • The funding fee is separate from closing costs, which are not included here.
  • See VA's full rate tables and exemption rules on the VA funding fee page ↗.
